It all starts with a check of your current site. Then, three stages.

1What exactly do you set up when you add Cloudflare?

We put Cloudflare in front of your site with four things tuned by hand: global caching, so pages load from a data centre near every visitor; a firewall tuned to filter out bots and attacks; free, automatic SSL; and cache and security rules set up properly, not just switched on.

2How is it different from switching it on myself?

Cloudflare has a free plan anyone can turn on, but the default settings can break pages or leave gaps. We tune the cache rules, security level and SSL to your specific site, so you get real speed and protection without the pitfalls of a setup that’s on but not configured.

3What is a CDN, and why does it matter?

A CDN is a network of servers spread around the world that keeps copies of your site and serves them from the city closest to the visitor. It matters because distance means waiting: a visitor in Milan served from a data centre in Italy sees the page sooner than one waiting for it from Romania. Cloudflare is the CDN we set up most often.

4Can Cloudflare break anything during setup?

Yes, if it’s simply switched on and left on the defaults. The most common problems are cart or account pages wrongly cached and a security level that blocks genuine forms. That’s why the rules are tuned by hand, on your site, and checked page by page after go-⁠live.

5Who decides which AI crawlers can access my site?

You do, from the Cloudflare dashboard, across three categories: search, agent and training. It isn’t a technical decision but a business one: an online shop usually wants to be read by anything that can show its products, while a site that lives on advertising wants the opposite. We explain the mechanism in detail in our article on the robots.txt that Cloudflare writes.

6Can Cloudflare change my robots.txt file?

Yes. Cloudflare has a feature that generates and updates robots.txt from the AI crawler settings in the dashboard, and for new customers it’s on by default. The generated block is added above your own file, between two marker comments starting with # BEGIN Cloudflare. Checking takes two minutes: open your-domain.com/robots.txt and look for the word Cloudflare.

7What was announced for 15 September 2026?

On 1 July 2026, Cloudflare announced that from 15 September 2026 it would change the default rules for AI traffic: multi-purpose crawlers are treated according to all of their behaviours, under the most restrictive rule. The practical upshot, in Cloudflare’s own words: anyone who chose to block AI training may end up blocking Googlebot, Applebot or BingBot as well.
